What Are The Differences Between "burası" and "burada"?
In English, we generally use the same word when we are talking the place: "here". In Turkish, it may change due to the usage or the duty of the word.
What is burası?
Actually bura and burası have same meanings. They mean "here". The word bura is the root of the word "here". We generally use burası instead of bura. This is the nominative. If the place is the subject of our sentence, then we use burası.
What is burada?
On the other hand, we have another "here" to say the place "in", "on" or "at": burada. That is not nominative. This one is locative. It is built by putting the location or time suffix "-de" to the root "bura"
bura + da = burada
Examples
Lets talk about some examples of these two different words.
If we are talking about the weather, we can make sentences in two different ways:
1. burası is our subject;
Burası çok sıcak. (It is very warm here)
2. burada is our location;
Burada hava çok sıcak. (It is very warm here)
As you see, if the subject is "here"= "burası", then we don't need another subject for our sentence. But if we want to give the location, then we need a subject, the answer of the question: "What is warm exactly?"
If we look at deeply, we say in the first sentence;
Here (this place) is warm
But in the second sentence;
The weather is warm in here (in this place)
If we are talking about the place, then we say "burası". But if there is something IN this place, then we say "burada":
The answer of the question "Where is here?" is actually the place. not anything in the place. So we ask this question in Turkish is: Burası neresi?
And the answer will be:
Burası Ankara: Here(this place) is Ankara
But if the question is something else in a place;
"Where are we?"
Then the subject is "we", and the place is "locative", says us a location, not the place exactly. In Turkish we ask: "biz neredeyiz?"
And the answer will be:
Buradayız: We are "in" here (IN this place)
On the phone, when you want to hear the place of the person you talk to, if the case is the place actually, not the location, they you can ask the place:
Orası neresi? (orası: there)
And answer will be the place:
Burası Ankara
But if you ask the location and the subject is the person:
The answer will be:
As a result; if we are talking about the place itself, we don't add the suffix -de/da. The other place words like burası are:
şurası and orası (Did you realize that "-sı" suffix all they have?) And if we are talking about something with location, then we add the suffix -de/da to say "in": burada ("in" here/in this place)
Now answer the question; How do we say "I was born here" and "This is a nice place" with "burası" and "burada"?
